Question 1

What is an industrial strainer?

Accepted Answer

An industrial strainer is a mechanical filtration device installed in-line within a piping system. Its primary function is to capture and retain solid contaminants while allowing the clean process fluid to pass through. By preventing unwanted particles from reaching sensitive components like pumps, valves, nozzles, and meters, strainers are indispensable for smooth and safe operation in chemical, oil and gas, power generation, and water treatment facilities.

Question 2

What is the difference between a Basket Strainer and a Y Strainer?

Accepted Answer

Basket Strainers offer very high dirt-holding capacity, lower pressure drop, and less frequent cleaning, making them ideal for high-flow continuous processes and main line filtration. Y Strainers provide compact inline protection with moderate dirt-holding capacity and slightly higher pressure drop, making them best suited for branch lines, pump protection, instrumentation, steam service, and space-constrained installations.

Question 3

What pressure ratings and temperature ranges are available for SHIELD Industrial Strainers?

Accepted Answer

SHIELD Industrial Strainers are available in pressure ratings up to 3705 PSIG and temperature ranges up to 800°F (427°C). They are manufactured to ASME B31.3, ASME Section VIII Div. 1, and API 598 standards.

Question 4

What materials are used for SHIELD Industrial Strainers?

Accepted Answer

SHIELD Industrial Strainers are available in carbon steel, stainless steel 304/316, and exotic alloys such as Monel and Hastelloy for corrosive services. Screen materials include perforated plate, wire mesh, wedge wire, and pleated designs with filtration ratings from 1/32" to 1/4" and finer mesh options.

Question 5

What applications are SHIELD Industrial Strainers used for?

Accepted Answer

SHIELD Industrial Strainers are widely used in oil and gas, power generation, chemical processing, water treatment, HVAC, fuel lines, process instrumentation protection, pump inlet protection, and steam service, protecting traps and control valves across all industries.

Question 6

What end connections are available for SHIELD Industrial Strainers?

Accepted Answer

SHIELD Industrial Strainers are available with flanged, threaded, socket weld, and butt weld end connections, and can be supplied with bolted cover or quick-opening options for easy maintenance.
